Sikh Group Seeks Permanent Closure of Indian Consulates in Toronto and Vancouver
October 15, 2024, Surrey, BC:
In the wake of the expulsion of Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, the sovereignist group Sikhs For Justice asked the Trudeau government to "Shut Down Indian Consulates in Toronto and Vancouver" to dismantle what they call the Indian spy network operating in Canada, which they claim is threatening the lives and liberty of pro-Khalistan Sikhs.
"While the expulsion of Indian diplomats is a positive step towards securing Canadian Sikhs from India's violent transnational repression, it is not sufficient by any means because India's network in Canada will continue to operate as long as the consulates in Toronto and Vancouver are allowed to exist," stated Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, General Counsel to Sikhs For Justice.
Citing the example of the Ottawa-based think tank The Macdonald-Laurier Institute (MLI), which SFJ claims is "a project of Pakistan," and MP Chandra Arya, who published a report SFJ calls baseless, Sikhs For Justice accused both of supporting Modi’s regime's violent transnational repression against Canadians. SFJ called upon the Canadian government to investigate and prosecute think tanks, lobby groups, and pro-Hindutva Indo-Canadians who spread disinformation, support India’s actions, challenge Canada’s sovereignty, jeopardize its democracy, and violate the Charter Rights of Canadians.
On the 16th month anniversary of Hardeep Singh Nijjar's assassination, Sikhs For Justice announced a "Shut Down Indian Terror Houses" rally at the Indian Consulates in Vancouver and Toronto on October 18, 2024, at 12:30 PM local time.
